Lagerstroemia fauriei ‘Bayou View’
This one is from the Akins Nursery along a swamp in Shreveport, Louisiana. The nursery was established there in 1943 and the exact date the L. faurei planted there dates back to the early 1950s, when it was a seedling planted by Frank Akin or Sherwood Akin. Exactly which of the brothers planted the tree remains a mystery - and how they got the seedling is another question lost in time and space.
How big is the tree? Well, the circumference is over 118 inches (200 cm) at chest height (25 November 2023) and I don't know the height exactly. In any case, it is quite tall. Is it the national champion?
