Lagerstroemia indica ‘Dynamite’
‘Whit II’ (David Byers, Crapemyrtle: A Grower's Thoughts , p. 78, 1997): Lagerstroemia indica DYNAMITE® ‘Whit II’ was selected and named by Dr Carl Whitcomb at his research farm in Stillwater, Oklahoma. “The crimson buds develop into cherry-red flowers and stand out against a background of thick, green, leathery leaves that begin as crimson young leaves. This cultivar roots and transplant very easily. It is a vigorous, upright growing plant that can grow up to six metres tall in the right location. So far, it has withstood winter cold down to -5°F (-20°C). It is descended from the same parents as other Whitcomb selections, RASPBERRY SUNDAE™ and ‘Centennial Spirit’ , but several generations later.” (Dr Carl Whitcomb, undated PhD brochure, received May 1999 at the US National Arboretum, Washington, DC): DYNAMITE® Lagerstroemia indica ‘Whit II’ cultivar, US plant patent no 10296. Flowers: cherry red; Flower buds: crimson; Leaf: crimson new leaves that quickly turn green; Autumn colour: orange; Port de la plante : single or multiple stems, very large shrub or small tree, 6 metres or more tall; very drought-tolerant; very resistant to powdery mildew.
