Lagerstroemia indica Purple Magic
(US plant patent no. 23,906): Deciduous, compact shrub up to 116 cm high and 90 cm wide after 4 years; leaves 47 mm long and 25 mm wide, young leaves emerge grey-red 178B on top and bottom, maturing to yellow-green 147A on top and yellow-green 146B on bottom; inflorescences 10 cm long and 8 cm wide, flowers 20 mm long and 36 mm wide, emerge and mature in the colour purple 77A; Emerged from open-pollinated seed from an unnamed and unpatented seedling known to the inventor as 16-02 and growing in Watkinsville, Georgia (Griffith Propagation Nursery Inc. Catalogue, 2014): “(1.8 m) (Zone 6) Dark purple flowers with glossy green foliage. Easy to maintain at a height of 90 to 120 cm. Remove spent flowers to encourage re-flowering after 4 to 5 weeks.” Named and introduced by Joshua Kardos. Name registered on 28 January 2014.
