Lagerstroemia subcostata CWJ12352
A beautiful, elegant and unusual deciduous small tree or shrub whose seeds I collected with Finlay Colley and Dan Hinkley in the cool mountains of northern Taiwan in 2007. There it grew in substantial groups in the forest, with distinctive, orange, peeling bark, forming small trees only 4-5 metres tall. The branches bent forward and bore small, oval leaves on red stems, which contrasted with the yellowing leaves before they fell off. There were also large, terminal panicles with thick seed capsules that followed the purple to white flowers. It probably needs a lime-free, well-drained soil with some moisture retention, in a sheltered, sunny spot.
