Lagerstroemia indica ‘Velma Royal Delight’
(Woody plant registration form, US National Arboretum, Washington, DC, 1994): Compact dwarf plant 120 cm tall and 110 cm wide; dark green leaves; purple flowers; mildew resistant; roots hardy to zone 6. One of six chance seedlings sourced from Otto Spring Nursery & Greenhouse in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, that were planted in Wichita, Kansas. Selected by Mrs Velma McDaniel in 1987 and appointed by her in 1991; introduced by Dr John C. Pair, Kansas State University Horticulture Research Centre in 1991. The most hardy selection in shrub trials at the KSU Horticulture Research Center in Wichita, Kansas, having survived temperatures of -18°F (-28°C).
